Swimming Lessons
Join the many children, youth and adults who have learned to swim at the YMCA! We offer swimming lessons for members and non-members of all ages and abilities. In addition to the following classes we also have private lessons for children and adults desiring to refine their swimming skills.
General Information
Sessions start at the beginning of the calander month and run through the end of the month. Sessions are 30 minutes in length and are offered:
Monday and Wednesday or
Tuesday and Thursday or
Saturday
To register for swimming lessons, please come into the Clark County YMCA and register at the Welcome Center. Most classes are limited to 5 children. For additional information please contact Membership Services at 360.885.9622. All registrations must be completed the Thursday before the class starts.

Ages 6 months to 3 years old
Water Babies is a program for parents and their children 6 to 36 months old which is centered on water adjustment. The class will also focus on safety and basic swimming skills.
You and Your Pre-Schooler is a class designed for parents and their children ages 2 to 5 years. This class allows parents to teach their children basic swimming skills with the same progression as the YMCA Aquatic Lesson program and provides needed assistance from an instructor. The class will also focus on water safety.
Ages 3 to 5 years old
Pike is the beginning level for 3-5 year olds. The focus of the class is on water adjustment and the basic skills the strokes will be built upon. Games and songs in addition to float belts may be used.
In the Eel level, the child should be able to paddle on front, back and side for 15 feet with support. Child should feel comfortable with submerging face and breathing patterns will be introduced.
The next level for 3 to 5 year olds is Ray. In this level the child should be able to paddle on front, back and side for 20 feet without support. Child should feel comfortable in deep water and will learn breathing patterns which are incorporated into the strokes. Sitting dives and water games are learned.
Starfish is the last level in the pre-school group. The child should be able to paddle on front, back and side for 40 feet without support. The focus of the class is on increasing endurance and independence. Treading water and kneeling dives are learned.
Ages 6 years old and older
Polliwog is the beginning level for 6 year olds. The focus of the class is on water adjustment and the basic skills the strokes will be built upon.
In the Guppy level, the child should be able to paddle on front, back and side for 25 yards with support and 20 feet without support. Breathing patterns with strokes and deep water skills will be introduced.
The third level in the youth group is Minnow. For this level the child should be able to paddle on front, back and side for 25 yards each without support. The focus of the class is on defining paddles into strokes and teaching base for breaststroke and elementary backstroke. The breathing technique for each stroke is refined.
